my dance journey.
Hi guys! So I have been dancing since 9 years old when I picked dancing as my primary school's extra-curriculum. I loved every moment and experience just performing and dancing on stage. So the journey continues and grows until the dancer I am today. 🤩
I've started dancing in primary school where I performed on stage with my classmates and schoolmates. When I was younger, I dance to perform as I was always a very out-going kid. Here are some (not so) embarrassing pictures of me in primary school smh 🤣 ps: i didn't have much pictures of me performing as a kid sooooo
Okay, then I went to high school and started learning dance from my beloved teacher, Sim Li, in Dance World Taipan with a few of my friends from high school. It was kinda spontaneous of me joining, maybe due to peer pressure at that time who knows? 🤷🏻♂️ I was there for around 4 to 5 years. I definitely learnt a lot there. I learnt how to choreograph, perform, compete and dance for examinations.
I remember we used to have an annual dinner performance where we perform. Well, at that time I don't even know how to apply simple makeup and do my hair as a performer 🤣 I used to rely so much on my teacher for makeup and hair hahaa!
Besides performing, I also competed in NATD competitions. In 2014, I only went to compete as a group (because I have zero confidence in doing solo) and got 1st place 🤩 That marks my first time competing in the dance scene, gained many experience and confidence afterwards 😎
Afterwards I stopped attending dance classes as I had to sit for my SPM (I was really sad thooo). But soon after SPM, I went back to attending classes and joined my second dance competition, this time in the solo and group category! And I got 1st place for both categories! 🤩

Besides performing and competing, I also went for dance exams held by NATD and am currently at National Award 3 level. With this achievement, I left Dance World in order to explore and gain new experiences in the dance scene! I was quite satisfied with the achievements I have gotten and felt that I maximised my knowledge and experience in Dance World, thus resulting in me leaving Dance World and exploring other dance studios. 😋
Meanwhile, I was also performing for different events for my friends, relatives as a group and as an individual. For group dances, I used to perform K-Pop dances (whaat ikrr 😹) like BTS, IOI, BlackPink etc, with my high school friends. *inserts some really swag dancing pictures 👇🏻*
performed for my uncle's event
performed for BAC's prom night
performed for my high school's Hari Kemerdekaan
So moving on to after I left Dance World, I went to Mustang Dance Academy MDA (well I joined when it was still Mustang Dance Studio omg). What made me join MDA at that time was because of the idea of them recording and posting videos on their own YouTube channel, which I thought at the moment if I were to be in the videos, I could gain exposure and include it in my portfolio as well (just in case I want to do a dance related job). I did my research and registered myself for classes. It started with me going to only girl style and hip hop classes as I was not aware of the different styles in the dance scene, but slowly, I adventured other styles like street jazz, urban choreography, house etc. Here are just some of videos I was included for MDA's class video shoot 🤑 - Attention, Shady Wit Me, Lights On, Feel Something, Either Way, Pay Me, With You (0:53), Do You?, etc.
Afterwards, I also joined a girl dancing group under Mustang created by Sue Yin (my girl style teacher) called AASY, which stands for anak-anak Sue Yin 🤣
Not long afterwards, I joined my first ever group dance showcase held by Next Ground Malaysia in 2018, with Skr Skr! 🤙🏻
Other than the groups I've joined, I was also given many opportunities to earn some money and gain more dancing experience out of the studio. I taught, choreographed and lead some dance classes throughout 2018. This gave me an insight on how dancers earn a living, be it as part time or full time. For me, it isn't that simple keeping up with this lifestyle due to the constant rehearsals and struggles remembering the steps for the performance, thus I still choose to do this as a part time thing whenever I'm available and free 😋
first performance show with Pink Fong and Astro
first flashmob show with Mustang for Kurnia and AmBank

Overall, I am truly blessed for the experiences and knowledge I gained throughout my 10 years (plus minus) of dancing. I love dancing so much and would never stop expressing myself through dance 🤑 never did I expect that I would be able to come this far in dance, but I am so blessed to have met many amazing dancers along my dance journey, and the people who gave me the opportunity to perform and do dance shows. 💓 also, do show some love on my dance account on instagram where I post experiences and videos of my dance journey --> instagram.com/weixshann !
xoxo,
