Leap of Faith: Changing my Degree Course

by - March 05, 2020

Change, one of the scariest leap of faiths. Looking back on an article of me in one of the Sunway College’s magazine, it made me realised how much different of a person I am today.

Before pursuing a degree in Bsc (Hons) in Accounting and Finance, I was pursuing a Bachelors Degree in Business Studies and in fact, I finished my first year. At that point, the subjects lined up for us were a mixture of everything, from marketing and management to accounting and finance. With this, I noticed my enthusiasm and curiosity for subjects that involved number and money. At a point in my life, I was doubting my degree choice.

I thought of switching course frequently throughout my first year and pushed the idea of it to the back of my mind as I was afraid of change. Plus, the other concerns such as prerequisites, scholarships and credit transfers were too much for me to handle at that moment. Besides, transferring to a degree course where I have zero foundation in, everyone including my program leader said I was crazy! However, towards the end of my first year, a tiny voice in me told me “its now or never”, and that was when I decided to took up the courage and made the change happen.

Right now, I am currently entering the last semester of my second year. The syllabus were more difficult and foreign to me as I had zero foundation in accounting or finance. The transition was tough, having few friends (and study buddies) in my class, I had to solely depend on my own effort to revise, inquire lecturers and seek for help when I need it. Many times, I've broke down and cried a little, but every time I managed to pick myself up and motivated myself to keep pushing through.

Today, I would say that this was the best decision I've made for myself as it opened more doors and opportunities for me. Instead of studying for the sake of a degree qualification and hoping for the best in my future and career, I have a direction and goal to study and work towards now. Prepping myself with the knowledge of accounting and finance, it benefited me in terms of my personal and professional development. Now, I can proudly say, I study hard and work hard for myself and my future. My goals and directions are much more clearer today, and I am glad I took a leap of faith and gave into the tiny voice in my head.
